Ground broken for new community center in Sunny Hills

The skies may have been overcast Oct. 27th, but the spirit was high as community leaders and county officials turned out for the ground breaking for the new John McKenna Building at the community center in Sunny Hills.

Washington County Board of County Commissioners allocated $100,000 some time back for the new community center, but land acquisition took longer than expected and the ground breaking was delayed. Now county personnel report they expect to see work begin on the site after the beginning of the new year.

Among those joining county commissioners for the groundbreaking were Mary Enfinger and Mary Smith from the Washington County Council on Aging, along with Linda Norton, Director of the County’s Library Program.

Enfinger, Executive Director of the the Council on Aging, said the agency will have an office in the new building and they plan on bringing more services to that area of the county. She added that more educational programs and expanded health programs are on tap.

Linda Norton was present to congratulate Josh Tracy for his dedicated efforts to set up a library in the Sunny Hills area. This project will also have space in the new community center.

Tracy, a member of Scout Troop 700, has made development of the library his Eagle Scout project and was pleased to see the groundbreaking finally take place. Tracy began his work with the Scouts in 1st grade and is now in the 10th grade.
